Is an electric kettle convenient and useful? Why do Americans never use it to boil water?
I am very puzzled. Electric water heaters are convenient to use and have a fast heating speed. They are really essential appliances for home use. Why don't you use them?
I searched for some information and found that there was a reason for it:
1. Firstly, there are different requirements for water sources.
In fact, Americans do not have the habit of boiling water before drinking it,
Because the tap water in the United States is purified and filtered,
It can already meet the standard for direct drinking, so there is no need to boil the water before drinking.
2. The standard voltage in the United States is between 110V-120V,
Compared to China, the standard for 220V is much lower,
When using an electric kettle at low voltage, the heating speed is naturally much slower than ours,
So it's not as convenient to use as we are.
3. There are many materials for making electric kettles,
But only hot water kettles made of 304 or 430 stainless steel are truly safe and reassuring,
Some other low-quality hot water kettle metal materials on the market contain high manganese steel,
Long term intake can lead to a decline in memory,
In the United States, such products are not allowed to appear, so they naturally do not need such products.
To add a side note to this, foreigners actually rarely choose stainless steel tableware or appliances,
The biggest reason is actually the fear of manganese poisoning,
Although edible grade 304 and 430 stainless steel are absolutely safe,
However, it cannot be ruled out that illegal merchants engage in illegal operations during production, using metals containing high manganese for production.
So when we choose stainless steel appliances such as tableware or electric kettles,
Never buy cheap products on the street, try to buy high-quality products from big brands in legitimate shopping malls,
4. Differences in dietary habits,
Compared to Chinese people, Americans do not have the habit of drinking tea regularly,
Even when drinking coffee, there is a dedicated coffee machine to complete the action of brewing coffee,
There is no need to boil water to make coffee, so naturally there is no need for an electric kettle.
China has a long-standing tea culture,
Whether ancient or modern, most families still have a habit of drinking plain water.
However, there are also many considerations for boiling water and drinking water
When the water is about to boil (80 ℃ -90 ℃), the lid of the kettle should be opened.
Because there are more and more organic pollutants in water now,
Some substances are volatile and will evaporate with water vapor when heated.
Therefore, when the water is about to boil, the lid of the kettle should be opened to allow these substances to evaporate as much as possible.
Especially now with severe water pollution, not paying attention to healthy drinking water can easily lead to illness.
After boiling the water, wait for about 3 minutes before turning off the heat!
This is because: ordinary river water needs to undergo chlorination treatment after being sent to the water plant to remove microorganisms and other impurities. However, at the same time, the interaction between chlorine and residual organic matter in water can form toxic carcinogenic compounds such as halogenated hydrocarbons and chloroform. The content of halogenated hydrocarbons and chloroform is closely related to changes in water temperature and the duration of boiling. When the water temperature reaches 90 ℃, the content of halogenated hydrocarbons increases from 53 micrograms per liter to 191 micrograms, and chloroform increases from 43.8 micrograms per liter to 177 micrograms, both exceeding the national standard by twice. When the water temperature rises to 100 ℃, the content of halogenated hydrocarbons and chloroform drops to 110 micrograms and 99 micrograms respectively, still exceeding the national standard. If boiling continues for 3 minutes, the content of halogenated hydrocarbons and chloroform will decrease to 9.2 micrograms and 8.3 micrograms, respectively, before it becomes safe drinking water. Of course, boiling water is not necessarily the longer it is boiled, as the longer it is boiled, the less volatile harmful substances and nitrites in the water will be concentrated due to the evaporation of water, resulting in a relatively higher content. Drinking such water is also harmful to the body.
Water cannot be boiled repeatedly, it is best to boil and drink it immediately.
Flowing water has a certain self-cleaning effect, and the most ideal drinking water is fresh water. If you want to use bottled water, use it if you want, and if not, store it for a long time. This drinking habit is not beneficial to health.
